When a body is found in the Antartica, Marshall Carrie Stetko about end her tour sets out to investigate, and uncovers a mystery involving a crashed Russian plane from the 1950&#39;s……<br/><br/>Whiteout is yet another movie based on a graphic novel. However, unlike most this isn&#39;t a superhero movie. Instead it&#39;s a thriller with a rather unusual setting.<br/><br/>The cast, led by Kate Beckinsale as Marshall Stetko are all good. Beckinsale here shows she is a convincing leading actress. The direction from Dominic Sena is pretty good. He stages some pretty good action sequences and as said, gets good performances from the cast.<br/><br/>However, despite all this good work, there is one major fault. The mystery is rather predictable. According to the credits, four screenwriters were involved in writing the script. I&#39;ve not read the graphic novel this was based on, but to need four screenwriters does suggest the script needed a lot of work.<br/><br/>The scenes set in the storms are very well shot, although there is a hint of CGI involved in some of these scenes. I&#39;m not sure how much CGI was involved, but apart from a scene at the end, I have to say it never bothered me.<br/><br/>As a thriller it&#39;s certainly not the worst I&#39;ve ever seen. And having a rather unusual setting makes it different. It&#39;s just a shame that it&#39;a all rather routine.
Whiteout was extremely promising; a thriller set in Antarctica, the coldest, most isolated location on the planet. A solid cast led by Kate Beckinsale, who usually signs up for at least interesting movies. Unfortunately, the film is a complete failure in all respect.<br/><br/>Since this movie is some sort of crime thriller, we&#39;ll start with the most important element of such a film, the screenplay. Here, we have uninspired, underdeveloped characters reciting boring lines and plot elements being revealed in linear fashion. Whiteout has all the characteristics of a weak 80s movie. <br/><br/>Secondly is the weak effort by everyone involved here. Sena&#39;s direction rates about as high as the temperature in Antarctica. The cinematography, pacing, music… everything seems to have been put together with no thoughts as to the final result. The film never thrills you in any way. Action scenes are completely botched.<br/><br/>And last but not least is the disappointment with the setting. One would think that with such a cliché story, all the quality of Whiteout would reside in a great depiction of Antarctica, the conditions over there and the obstacles that result from this. But Antarctica is poorly depicted here. Sena never succeeds in making us feel what it&#39;s like.<br/><br/>It all looks semi-pretty in the usual Sena way. Lots of color correction and fancy sets, but it doesn&#39;t gel. In this movie, you&#39;ll see Kate Beckinsale traumatized by a past event in ways that seem ludicrous and then lose two fingers as if you&#39;d lost your car keys. A plot that makes no sense, an obvious twist. You will also learn that female Marshals in Antarctica live in trendy- looking accommodations and take lengthy, steamy showers after of course showing their butt to the audience.<br/><br/>I&#39;m down for tongue in cheek entertainment, but if the tone of a film goes for dark and gritty, there should be an effort not to make the result so laughable.

Whiteout is adapted from a 4-issue comic-book miniseries written by Greg Rucka with art by Steve Lieber, published by Oni Press in 1998. The story was collected as a graphic novel in 2001. Much of the work at the station revolves around analysing core samples of ice. The Antarctic ice pack has been accumulating for millennia. As it accumulates, gas from the atmosphere is trapped in the ice. By drilling down into the ice and removing core samples, scientists can measure the composition of the atmosphere when the ice first formed. By examining other details of the ice, they can make judgements about temperature levels. Because the ice has been compressed under tons of more ice for millennia, the gas trapped in the ice is extremely compressed. If you put the ice in room temperature water or liquor, this compressed gas escapes, making it look like it is boiling.
